London Southend is the smallest and furthest east of the airports carrying the London name. It sits just north of Southend-on-Sea in Essex, off the A127, and its appeal is speed at the airport end: a single compact terminal where the walk from the door to the gate is short. The trade-off is the journey to reach it, which from most of London is a genuine cross-county run.
This guide covers what you need to know before booking a minicab to or from Southend Airport: the drop-off and pickup rules, how it compares with the train, and how to plan the timing.

How far is Southend Airport?
Roughly 40 miles from central London along the A127 and A13. From Essex it is much closer: about 19 miles from Chelmsford and about 40 from Colchester by road. Our Chelmsford and Colchester airport transfer guide compares Southend with the other three airports from those towns.
From south of the river, the route depends on where you start. The Greenwich and Docklands side usually heads north through the Blackwall or Silvertown tunnel and out on the A13. The far south-east often crosses at Dartford instead, where a Dart Charge applies. Our corridor guides for Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, Deptford and New Cross and Elephant and Castle cover the Southend run from each of those areas.
The express drop-off and pickup zone
Since 1 March 2026 the airport has an Express Pick-up & Drop-off zone directly opposite the terminal, replacing the front of the former short-stay car park. How it works:
- £8 for up to 10 minutes. Ten minutes is the maximum stay.
- No barrier. Cameras record the number plate on the way in.
- Pay online afterwards, on the airport's website, by midnight the following day.
- Overstaying or not paying leads to a Parking Charge Notice.
If you are being dropped off or collected by friends or family, that £8 is theirs to pay, and the 10-minute limit is tight for an arrivals pickup when you don't know exactly when someone will come through. That is one practical reason a pre-booked car suits Southend: the driver handles the airport end. Airport charges are set by the airport, not by us; we confirm how they apply when we quote your journey. Our UK airport drop-off charges guide compares the fees at other airports.
Train or minicab to Southend Airport?
Southend Airport has its own railway station a short walk from the terminal, with trains to London Liverpool Street. For some travellers the train is the right answer, and it is worth saying so:
- The train suits a solo traveller or a couple with light luggage, starting near Liverpool Street or on the line, at a time when trains are running.
- A minicab suits groups (the fare is per vehicle, not per person), anyone with real luggage or a pushchair, early-morning departures before the first trains, and anyone starting away from the line. That includes most of south London, where a train journey means crossing the city first.
Check the train operator's timetable for your date before you rely on it, especially for an early flight or at weekends, when engineering work is common.
Planning the timing
Southend's small terminal means less time inside the airport than at a hub, but don't let that squeeze the journey itself. Work backwards from the airline's bag-drop deadline, not the departure time. Our guide to how early to arrive at the airport explains how. Then add margin for the A127 and A13, which can slow at peak times, and for the tunnels or the Dartford Crossing if you are coming from south of the river.
For an early flight, our early-morning airport transfer guide covers booking a pre-dawn pickup.
Getting picked up at Southend
When you book an airport pickup, give us your flight number. The pickup is then set against your actual landing time, so a delay adjusts the pickup instead of leaving you looking for a car that has gone. Our waiting time and meet-and-greet guide explains the gap between landing and reaching arrivals.
If you would like the driver waiting inside with a name board, add meet and greet when you book. It is an optional £10 extra on airport pickups.
What does a Southend Airport minicab cost?
Our fixed airport fares currently cover Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted. Southend journeys are priced from the route instead: distance, time of day and vehicle. Any price we show is an estimate, and we confirm the final price when you book. Put your postcode into the booking form to see an estimate for your own journey.
