Elephant & Castle is where south London's main roads meet. The A2 from Kent, the A3 towards Clapham and Portsmouth, the A23 towards Brighton and Gatwick, and the New Kent Road east all converge within a few hundred metres. For an airport transfer that is genuinely useful: whichever airport you are flying from, a driver leaving SE1 or SE17 is already on the right road within a minute or two of setting off.

The Congestion Charge line runs right through here
This is the practical quirk of the area. The Congestion Charge zone boundary follows the Elephant & Castle gyratory and New Kent Road. Kennington and the northern tip of SE1 are inside it. Walworth, the Old Kent Road and everything south of the Elephant are outside it.
So two neighbours a few streets apart can be on opposite sides of the line. For a pre-booked transfer it makes no difference — licensed private hire is exempt for the journey, and our vehicles are ULEZ compliant. It matters if someone is driving you in their own car. Pickups in the new developments
Elephant & Castle has been rebuilt almost entirely over the last decade, and the new towers are a genuine source of missed pickups.
- Elephant Park, One The Elephant and the Castle development are large sites with several residential entrances, some on roads that did not exist a few years ago and may not be right on an older map.
- Give the building name and the entrance, not just the postcode. "Elephant Park, Ash Avenue entrance" gets a driver to you; a bare SE17 postcode drops them somewhere on the estate.
- The gyratory itself has been substantially reworked with segregated cycle lanes and restricted turns. A driver's approach may look roundabout because a direct turn is no longer legal.
- On Walworth Road, stopping is restricted along much of the shopping stretch. A side road a few metres off it is usually the sensible meeting point, and your driver will often suggest one.
Which airport, and how the run works
Gatwick — the natural one. Straight down the A23 through Kennington, Brixton and Streatham, then the M23. Around 27 miles and about as direct as a Gatwick run from London gets.
Heathrow — west, either along the A3 through Clapham and Wandsworth to the M4, or across the river and out on the A4. Around 17 miles.
London City — east along the New Kent Road and Old Kent Road to the A2 and Limehouse Link, or through Rotherhithe. Roughly 8 miles and the shortest airport transfer available here.
Luton — north through the City and out on the A1 or M1. Around 35 miles.
Stansted — north-east through the City and out on the A12 and M11. Around 37 miles.
Southend — east on the A13 and A127, around 42 miles. Book well ahead for this one.
Kennington and the Oval
Kennington is quiet, largely Georgian and mostly residential, and it sits on the Northern line where the Charing Cross and Bank branches split — a detail that matters if you were planning to train it, because which branch turns up determines whether you end up in the right part of town.
Test match and one-day traffic at the Oval is worth planning around. On a match day the roads around Kennington Oval, Harleyford Road and Vauxhall get slow from mid-morning and stay slow into the evening. If you are flying out on a match day, add time.
