Nottingham's centre is compact and easy to walk around. Much of the minicab demand comes from journeys outside it: to the stadiums and cricket ground beside the Trent, the university campuses, and East Midlands Airport, about half an hour away.
Getting around the city
- Nottingham station. Trains from London St Pancras arrive here, just south of the city centre. The tram stop sits above the station, and the roads around it are busy. Agree a specific pickup point.
- The trams. Nottingham's tram network shares some city-centre streets, and certain roads are limited to trams and buses. Your driver may need to take a longer route than you expect.
- The universities. The University of Nottingham's main campus is west of the centre, and Nottingham Trent University is in and around the city centre. Start and end of term are the busiest times.
- Old Market Square and the Lace Market. The heart of the centre and the busiest areas at night. Parts are pedestrianised.
Sport by the Trent
Three major venues sit close together beside the River Trent: the City Ground (Nottingham Forest), Meadow Lane (Notts County) and Trent Bridge, the international cricket ground. When two of them are in use on the same day, the bridges over the Trent become very busy. Agree a pickup point away from the river and allow extra time. The Motorpoint Arena in the city centre has its own concert-night traffic.

East Midlands Airport
East Midlands Airport is around 15 miles south-west of Nottingham, usually about 30 minutes by car outside peak times. There's no direct rail link to the terminal, so a car is the most direct way to get there, especially for an early departure.
For long-haul flights, Birmingham Airport (around 50 miles) and Manchester Airport (around 70 miles) are the usual alternatives. See our Birmingham Airport guide.
Longer journeys
Nottingham is central enough that runs to Derby, Leicester, Lincoln and the London airports are common. Our long-distance travel guide explains when a car makes more sense than the train for a longer trip.
