Minicab in Birmingham: City & Airport Guide

Getting around Birmingham by minicab: the three city-centre stations, match and event days, the Clean Air Zone, and the run to Birmingham Airport and the NEC.

Birmingham is a city of ring roads, and many of its busiest destinations are outside the centre: the NEC and the airport to the east, Edgbaston to the south-west, and Villa Park to the north. A minicab journey here is more often about getting across the city than within the centre, and that shapes how you should plan one.

Three stations, not one

Birmingham city centre has three mainline stations within walking distance of each other. Visitors mix them up all the time:

  • New Street is the main one, with the Grand Central shopping centre on top. Most long-distance services, including trains from London Euston, use it.
  • Moor Street is a short walk east, next to the Bullring. Chiltern trains from London Marylebone run here.
  • Snow Hill is on the north side of the centre, mainly for local and regional services.

If you're being collected, check which station your train actually arrives at. New Street has several entrances, so name the one you'll use. Like most big stations, it's surrounded by roads where cars can't stop, so agree a specific street when you book.

Getting through the city centre

Birmingham has been gradually restricting through-traffic in the city centre, with bus lanes, bus gates and changed road layouts. A car often has to go round the ring road instead of straight across. That means:

  • A journey between two central points can be longer by road than it looks on a map.
  • Older satnav data can be wrong, so a full postcode and a nearby landmark help the driver.
  • Pedestrianised shopping streets around the Bullring and New Street can't be reached by car. Name the nearest street a car can get to.

Birmingham also has a Clean Air Zone covering the area inside the A4540 Middleway ring road. It affects some older vehicles, and you don't need to do anything about it as a passenger.

Match days and events

A few venues create predictable traffic peaks:

  • Villa Park in Aston on Aston Villa match days.
  • St Andrew's in Bordesley on Birmingham City match days.
  • Edgbaston for international and county cricket.
  • The NEC and Resorts World east of the city, for exhibitions and concerts.

On these days, book with extra time and agree a pickup point a few streets away from the venue, not at the gates. Leaving after an event is always harder than arriving, because everyone leaves at once. Our stadium and concert guide has advice that applies to any big venue.

Birmingham Airport and the NEC

Birmingham Airport is about 9 miles east of the city centre along the A45, right next to the NEC. Outside busy periods, the drive usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. On a big exhibition day the roads around the airport and the NEC share the same traffic, so allow extra time even if you're only flying.

Birmingham International station sits between the NEC and the airport, with a free shuttle link to the terminal. If you're arriving by train with light luggage, that link works well. With heavy cases, children or an early flight, a car to the terminal door is usually simpler. Our Birmingham Airport guide covers the terminal itself, and the Birmingham Airport page has estimated fares.

Longer journeys from Birmingham

Birmingham is central enough that long-distance journeys are common, to the London airports, Manchester Airport or the coast. For runs of this length, the per-mile cost usually falls as the distance grows. Our long-distance travel guide explains when a car beats the train for this kind of trip.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How long does a minicab from Birmingham city centre to the airport take? A: It's about 9 miles along the A45, usually 20 to 30 minutes outside busy periods. Allow extra time on major NEC event days.

Q: Which Birmingham station do trains from London arrive at? A: Trains from London Euston arrive at New Street. Chiltern trains from London Marylebone arrive at Moor Street, a short walk away. Check your ticket before booking a pickup.

Q: Do I have to pay the Birmingham Clean Air Zone charge as a passenger? A: No. The Clean Air Zone applies to certain older vehicles, not passengers. Any charge is for the vehicle.

Q: Where should I get picked up after a match at Villa Park? A: Agree a pickup point a few streets away from the stadium, not at the gates. Roads near the ground are congested after the final whistle, and there may be closures.

Q: Can I get a minicab from Birmingham to a London airport? A: Yes. Long-distance airport runs are common from Birmingham. Enter the journey for an estimated fare, and book well ahead for early-morning flights.
