Notting Hill Carnival returns on Sunday 29 and Monday 30 August 2027, with around two million people expected across the weekend. Entry is free, and the streets of W10 and W11 close to traffic.
The travel problem is specific and predictable: the area you want to reach has no vehicle access, the nearest stations are overwhelmed, and two million people try to leave within an hour of the same curfew. Here is how to plan around it.

Why you cannot be dropped at the Carnival
There is no version of this where a car reaches the parade route. Extensive road closures cover the area across both main days, and TfL's standing advice is to avoid driving entirely. Even the streets outside the official cordon fill with pedestrians, stewards and diverted buses.
The realistic approach is a two-stage journey: a car to a point outside the closure zone, then a walk in. Twenty minutes on foot is normal and unavoidable.
The same applies to leaving. A driver cannot collect you from Ladbroke Grove at 7:15pm on the Monday — nobody can.
Which stations close
Several of the nearest stations become exit-only, entry-only or shut completely at points across the weekend, and which is which changes hour by hour depending on crowding:
- Notting Hill Gate
- Ladbroke Grove
- Westbourne Park
- Latimer Road
- Holland Park
- Queensway
This is why "I'll just get the Tube home" is a weaker plan than it sounds. You may arrive at a closed station in a crowd of thousands with the same idea.
Where a taxi can realistically pick you up
Pick a named landmark well outside the closure zone, agree it before you go, and walk out to it. Vague plans fail here — phone signal is poor in dense crowds, and "I'll call you when I'm out" is not a plan when two million people are doing the same.
Sensible directions to walk towards, depending on which side of the Carnival you end up on:
- South towards Kensington High Street or Holland Park Avenue
- East towards Paddington or Bayswater
- West towards Shepherd's Bush
- North towards Kensal Green or Willesden Junction
The further out you are willing to walk, the more normally the roads behave. A fifteen-minute walk can be the difference between a car reaching you and a car sitting in gridlock.
Set the pickup point and time before you lose signal, and build in slack — you will walk slower than you think through crowds.
The 7pm problem
Everything stops at 7pm on both main days, which means a substantial share of two million people start moving at once. Roads around the area are at their worst between roughly 7pm and 9pm, stations are at their most restricted, and demand for any kind of car peaks hard across west London.
Two ways to handle it:
- Leave before the curfew. Departing at 6pm rather than 7pm is a completely different journey.
- Stay put and leave later. Have food nearby, let the crush pass, and travel at 9pm when the roads have cleared.
The middle option — joining the 7pm exodus and hoping — is the one that goes wrong.

Groups, luggage and airports
Carnival weekend is also August bank holiday getaway weekend, which is why the roads are doing two jobs at once.

- Assume a 15–20 minute walk each way, minimum.
