The bank holiday coincides with Notting Hill Carnival, which runs on the Sunday and Monday and brings around two million people into W10 and W11. Extensive road closures across the area sit directly between much of central and north London and the routes west towards the M4.

The failure mode is not the motorway. It is the first ten miles — getting out of London to reach the motorway — which is where closures, diversions and displaced traffic actually bite.
Book earlier than you would normally
Bank holiday weekends are when advance booking stops being a nicety. Two things run out:
- Early-morning slots. The pre-6am departures go first, and they go early.
- Larger vehicles. Bank holiday travel skews towards families and groups with a lot of luggage, so estates and minibuses are under the most pressure precisely when most people need them.

Coming home on the Tuesday
The return leg gets less attention and causes as many problems. Tuesday 31 August combines returning holidaymakers with the first working day back, and arrivals halls are at their busiest.
