How far is Ascot from London and Heathrow?

From Heathrow it's much closer, which makes Ascot a realistic plan for visitors flying in for the racing.
Train vs taxi to Ascot
Trains run from London Waterloo to Ascot station. The walk from the station to the racecourse is short but uphill, and slower when the crowds are heading the same way.
The train is fine for one or two people. A car makes more sense when:
- You're a group. A minibus fare shared by eight people can compare well with eight return rail tickets, and you travel together.
- You're dressed for the day. Formal racewear, hats and heels don't mix well with a crowded platform and an uphill walk — a car gets you close to the entrance.
- You're coming from Heathrow or outside London, where the train would mean going into Waterloo first.
- You want a reliable way home without queuing for trains after the last race.

The real challenge: getting home
