There is no Underground anywhere in Dulwich, Forest Hill or Sydenham. There never has been. This is Overground, Southern and Thameslink country, on a ridge of hills between the South Circular and Crystal Palace, and it is one of the strongest pre-booked transfer markets in London precisely because the rail options all point towards London Bridge and Victoria rather than towards a terminal.

The Dulwich traffic filters
This is the local detail that most affects a pickup, and it catches drivers and passengers alike.
Several roads through Dulwich Village are restricted to through traffic, with camera-enforced filters that apply at certain times of day. The effect is that a route which looks direct on a map is not available, and your driver may approach from what seems like the wrong direction or take a noticeably longer path between two nearby points.
That is not the driver going astray. Driving through a filter means a penalty charge, so they will not do it. Two practical consequences:
- Allow a little extra time for a pickup inside the Village during filter hours.
- Do not be alarmed if the car tracking towards you appears to loop around. It is following the only legal route.
Lordship Lane — there are two of them
Worth flagging because it genuinely causes wrong journeys. Lordship Lane in East Dulwich (SE22) and Lordship Lane in Tottenham (N17) are both long, well-known roads about fourteen miles apart. If you enter "Lordship Lane" without a postcode into any booking form, you have a coin-flip.
Always include SE22 with a Lordship Lane address. The same care is worth taking with Sydenham, which is sometimes confused with Sydenham Hill — a different station on a different line, up the hill in SE26.
Roads out
- The South Circular (A205) runs through the area via Dulwich Common and Lordship Lane, and it is the main east–west route. It is also narrow, residential in places and slow at peak.
- The A212 and Sydenham Road run south-east towards Crystal Palace and Beckenham.
- Forest Hill and Honor Oak sit on the hill, with steep approaches on Honor Oak Park and Devonshire Road. Winter ice is a real consideration on the steeper streets.
- Sydenham Hill is one of the steepest roads in south London and wooded along much of its length.
- East Dulwich and the Lordship Lane area have heavy resident parking, so expect your driver to stop a few doors from the address.
Airport by airport
Gatwick — the natural airport here. West to the A23 through Streatham, or south through Crystal Palace and Croydon to the M23. Around 25 miles, and one of the shortest Gatwick runs from any part of London inside the South Circular.
Heathrow — around 21 miles west. The South Circular is the direct line and rarely the quick one; a driver will often prefer the A205 to the A3 and M4, or into town and out on the A4.
London City — around 10 miles north-east through Peckham and the tunnels.
Luton — around 37 miles north through the centre or round the M25.
Stansted — around 38 miles north-east.
Southend — around 44 miles east. The longest of the six from here, so book well ahead.
Family travel from the Dulwich schools
This area has an unusually high concentration of families, and school holidays here are airport-transfer season.
