Camberwell is one of the largest neighbourhoods in inner London with no railway station at all. Camberwell station closed in 1916 and has never reopened, despite being proposed repeatedly ever since. If you live in SE5 and you are catching a flight, your journey begins with a bus, a walk to Denmark Hill or Oval, or a car.

The rail picture, honestly
- Camberwell — no station. Denmark Hill is the nearest, about 15 minutes' walk from much of SE5, and it is on Thameslink and the Overground.
- Peckham Rye — a busy interchange with Southern and Thameslink services, useful for getting to Victoria, London Bridge and Blackfriars.
- Queens Road Peckham — smaller, on the Overground.
- Nunhead — a quiet station on the Southeastern line into Victoria and Blackfriars.
None of these goes to an airport. Thameslink from Peckham Rye or Denmark Hill is the closest thing to a useful rail link, because it connects to the Gatwick and Luton services — but it means changing, and at Peckham Rye that change is up and over a footbridge. Rye Lane, and where a driver can actually stop
Rye Lane is the problem road here. It is narrow, lined with shops, permanently busy with loading and buses, and stopping along most of it is restricted. If your address is on Rye Lane, expect your driver to suggest a side street — Bournemouth Road, Blenheim Grove or one of the residential turnings — rather than pulling up outside.
Elsewhere:
- Peckham High Street and Peckham Hill Street are bus-heavy with restricted stopping.
- Camberwell Green and Denmark Hill form a busy junction where the A202 and A215 cross. Camberwell Church Street is slow at peak.
- The estates and new blocks around Peckham — including the Aylesbury regeneration to the north — have internal roads and multiple entrances. Give the block name.
- Nunhead is quieter, mostly residential streets around the cemetery, and generally straightforward for a doorstep pickup.

Gatwick — the natural airport for SE15 and SE5. West to Camberwell Green, onto the A23 at Brixton, then south through Streatham and onto the M23. Around 26 miles and one of the shorter Gatwick runs from inner London.
Heathrow — around 19 miles west, usually via the A202 to Vauxhall then the A3 and M4, or over the river and out on the A4.
London City — around 8 miles north-east through Rotherhithe or the Blackwall Tunnel. The shortest airport run from here.
Luton — north through the centre and out on the A1 or M1. Around 36 miles.
Stansted — north-east via the City or the Blackwall Tunnel to the A12 and M11. Around 37 miles.
Southend — east through the tunnels and out on the A13 and A127. Around 42 miles.
Denmark Hill, King's College and early hospital shifts
Camberwell is dominated by King's College Hospital and the Maudsley, and a significant share of the airport transfers we handle from SE5 are staff travelling at unsociable hours — the same people for whom a 4am bus to Denmark Hill is not an appealing start to a holiday.
