Sheffield is built on seven hills, and it doesn't let you forget it. Routes that look short on a map can involve long climbs and winding roads. For anyone carrying luggage, that's often the difference between walking from the station and booking a car.

The other thing that sets Sheffield apart is air travel. Doncaster Sheffield Airport closed to passenger flights in 2022, so for now most flights start with a road journey to another city. If you're reading this later, check whether it has reopened.

Getting around the city

  • Sheffield station. Trains from London St Pancras arrive here. The station is at the bottom of the hill, below the city centre and the universities, so a car up the hill with cases is a common booking.
  • The universities. The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam bring busy periods at the start and end of terms. See our university move-in guide.
  • Meadowhall. The shopping centre to the north-east, by the M1. Weekend and pre-Christmas traffic around it can be heavy.
  • The Supertram. Some city-centre streets are shared with trams, which affects where a car can stop.

Match days and events

Sheffield has two league football grounds: Bramall Lane (Sheffield United), just south of the centre, and Hillsborough (Sheffield Wednesday), to the north-west. On match days, agree a pickup point a few streets away from the ground. Each spring, the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible brings visitors into the city centre for more than two weeks.

The Clean Air Zone

Sheffield has a Clean Air Zone covering the inner ring road and the city centre. It applies to certain older commercial vehicles. Passengers don't need to do anything.

Which airport from Sheffield?

Unless you're flying from a reopened Doncaster Sheffield, you'll be choosing between:

  • Manchester Airport. The widest range of flights, including long-haul. Around 40 to 45 miles across the Pennines, so the journey time depends heavily on the weather and the route. See our Manchester Airport guide.
  • East Midlands Airport. Around 45 miles south via the M1. A good choice for many European holiday flights.
  • Leeds Bradford Airport. Around 40 miles north. Our Leeds guide covers the approach roads.

Check which airport your airline flies from before you book. The routes over the Pennines to Manchester can be slow or affected by snow in winter, so allow extra time. Our winter airport travel guide has more on this.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What is the nearest airport to Sheffield? A: Doncaster Sheffield Airport closed to passenger flights in 2022. Manchester, East Midlands and Leeds Bradford are each around 40 to 45 miles away. Choose based on where your airline flies from.

Q: How long is a minicab from Sheffield to Manchester Airport? A: Often around an hour, but the journey across the Pennines can take much longer in heavy traffic or bad weather. Allow a generous buffer.

Q: Where should I get picked up after a match at Bramall Lane? A: Agree a pickup point a few streets away from the ground. Roads right next to the stadium are congested after the match.

Q: Does the Sheffield Clean Air Zone affect passengers? A: No. It applies to certain older commercial vehicles, not passengers.

Q: Can I book a minicab from Sheffield station up to the university? A: Yes. It's a short but steep journey, and a car is often easier than walking with luggage.
