Newcastle is a compact city, but the Tyne runs straight through it. Getting from Newcastle to Gateshead, or down to the Quayside from the city centre above it, means crossing bridges and steep hills. That shapes how journeys work here more than distance does.

Where most journeys start and end

  • Newcastle Central Station. Trains from London King's Cross and Edinburgh arrive here. The front of the station is busy, so agree a pickup point on a nearby street.
  • The Quayside. Restaurants and bars on both banks of the Tyne. The roads down to the river are steep and narrow in places, and parts are busy with pedestrians at night.
  • St James' Park. Newcastle United's stadium sits right next to the city centre, so match days affect traffic across the centre, not just around the ground.
  • Gateshead. Across the river, including the Glasshouse music venue and the Baltic arts centre.

Match days and nights out

On a Newcastle United home match day, roads around the ground and the city centre fill up before kick-off, and everyone leaves at the same time afterwards. Agree a pickup point a few streets away from the stadium, and expect to wait a little longer than usual. Our stadium and concert guide has general advice for big crowds.

At weekends, the Bigg Market, the Quayside and the streets around them are very busy late in the evening. A pre-booked car with a specific pickup point is much easier than finding one in the crowd.

The Clean Air Zone

Newcastle and Gateshead have a Clean Air Zone covering the city centre and the main Tyne crossings. It affects certain older commercial vehicles. As a passenger, you don't need to do anything about it.

Newcastle International Airport

Newcastle Airport is around 7 miles north-west of the city centre. Outside busy periods, the drive usually takes 20 to 25 minutes. The Metro also runs to the airport, which works well if you're travelling light from a station on the line. With heavy cases, children or an early flight, a car to the terminal is simpler.

For long-haul flights, some travellers fly from Manchester Airport instead. That's a long drive of around 150 miles across the Pennines, so compare the total journey time, including any connecting flight, before you decide. Our long-distance travel guide covers journeys of that length.

Beyond the city

Journeys from Newcastle to Durham, Sunderland, the Northumberland coast and Teesside are common. Rural pickups in Northumberland can be hard to find, so give a postcode plus a description such as "the farm entrance after the bridge".
