Electric & Hybrid Minicabs in London: Requesting a Greener Ride

How to request an electric or hybrid vehicle for your London minicab journey, and why it can help with ULEZ costs on journeys into central London.

Estimates only — we confirm the final fare.

Our fleet includes electric and hybrid vehicles alongside standard petrol/diesel cars, and you can request one for your journey. It isn't a separate bookable vehicle class — there's no "EV" option in the fleet category list — so the way to ask is simple: add it to your notes when you book.

Prices are estimates and may vary; requesting an electric or hybrid vehicle is subject to availability for your pickup time and location, not guaranteed for every booking.

Why it can help on journeys into central London

  • ULEZ compliance — electric and hybrid vehicles meet the Ultra Low Emission Zone's emissions standard, which is relevant for any part of your route that falls inside Greater London. See our Congestion Charge & ULEZ guide for how that's factored into your estimate either way.
  • A quieter ride — genuinely noticeable on a long airport transfer after a flight.

How to request one

  1. Get your estimated fare as normal — pickup, destination, date, time and passengers.
  2. Add a note like "electric or hybrid vehicle if available" in the notes field.
  3. We'll do our best to match you with one for your pickup slot — since availability varies by time and location, it isn't something we can promise for every booking, which is why it's a request rather than a selectable option.

London is going electric anyway — here's where that stands

You may have noticed more electric vehicles carrying passengers around London. That's licensing policy, not coincidence:

  • Black cabs: newly licensed taxis have had to be zero emission capable since 2018. TfL reported in December 2023 that more than half of London's black taxi fleet was zero emission capable.
  • Private hire vehicles (minicabs): since 1 January 2023, every PHV licensed for the first time must be zero emission capable and meet the Euro 6 standard (TfL).

The practical effect is that the proportion of electric and hybrid vehicles on the road rises every year as older cars leave the fleet. It also means "can I get an electric one?" is an increasingly easy request to meet — but it stays a request rather than a guarantee, because which vehicle is free at your pickup time depends on the day.

Worth knowing

This is about the vehicle itself, not the fare — an electric or hybrid car doesn't change your estimated price, and the same "estimate now, confirm at booking" process applies regardless of which vehicle you're matched with. If having a specific vehicle type matters more than timing for your journey, mention that too and we'll factor it in.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How do I get an electric vehicle for a journey in London? A: Book as normal and add a note asking for an electric or hybrid vehicle. It isn't a separate bookable class, so it's a request we match where one is available for your pickup time and location.

Q: Are London minicabs electric? A: An increasing share are. TfL requires every private hire vehicle licensed for the first time since 1 January 2023 to be zero emission capable and meet Euro 6, so the fleet turns over year by year.

Q: Are London black cabs electric? A: Newly licensed black cabs have had to be zero emission capable since 2018, and TfL reported in December 2023 that more than half the fleet had reached that standard.

Q: Does an electric vehicle cost more to book? A: No. Requesting an electric or hybrid vehicle doesn't change your estimated fare — the price depends on the journey and the vehicle size, not the fuel.

Q: Can you guarantee an electric vehicle for my booking? A: No. Availability varies by time and location, so it's offered as a request rather than a guaranteed vehicle class. Tell us if it matters more than timing and we'll factor that in.
