London has two very different licensed options, and choosing the right one is the single biggest cost decision.
- Black cabs (hackney carriages) run on a regulated meter you can’t know in advance. You can hail them on the street or pick them up at a rank, which is convenient, but a long or slow journey can climb quickly because you pay for time as well as distance.
- Private hire (minicabs) must be booked in advance through a licensed operator and can usually quote a price up front. For longer or predictable journeys — an airport run, a cross-town trip — a pre-agreed price is often cheaper and removes the meter anxiety.

- Avoid the 08:00–09:30 and 17:00–18:30 peaks where you can — a crawl through central London adds time-based cost and slows private-hire turnaround.
- Late evening runs are often quicker (and therefore cheaper per mile), though a night surcharge can apply between roughly 22:00 and 06:00.
- Build in buffer for events — a match at Wembley or a concert at the O2 spikes demand across whole swathes of the city.
Watch the zones and charges
Central London journeys can attract the Congestion Charge and, for older vehicles, ULEZ charges. Operators handle these differently, so ask how they’re applied when you book — it can change the total more than the mileage does.
