Waterloo is one of the busiest railway stations in Europe and it goes to no airport at all. That single fact shapes every airport journey out of SE1. Whatever the station concourse suggests, if you are flying from Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, London City or Southend, you are leaving Waterloo to get there — and for most people travelling with luggage, that means a car from the door.

The Gatwick Express is not at Waterloo
This catches people out constantly, so it is worth saying plainly. The Gatwick Express runs from Victoria, not Waterloo. The old Gatwick service from Waterloo has not existed for years. If you are at Waterloo and planning to train it to Gatwick, you are looking at a Tube hop to Victoria with your cases, or a Thameslink connection from London Bridge or Blackfriars — both of which mean an interchange, escalators and a platform change before you have even started.
Similarly, Waterloo has no direct link to Heathrow. The Elizabeth line does not serve it. You would be going via Paddington or Bond Street.
None of that means the train is wrong for everyone. It means the calculation is different here than it is somewhere with a direct service, and for two or more people with checked bags a pre-booked car often works out both simpler and comparable on cost.
Where a driver can actually collect you
The South Bank is one of the hardest parts of central London to be picked up from, because most of it is deliberately not driveable.
- The riverside walk is pedestrian. There is no vehicle access to the Royal Festival Hall frontage, the National Theatre riverside, or the stretch past the London Eye. Do not set your pickup pin on the river path.
- Use Belvedere Road or Upper Ground instead. These run behind the South Bank Centre and the National Theatre and are where cars can legitimately stop.
- At Waterloo station, the black-cab rank is not for private hire. A pre-booked car will normally collect from Waterloo Road or the Victory Arch (Exit 5) side, or on Mepham Street behind the station.
- County Hall, the Marriott and the Park Plaza hotels all have their own set-down arrangements — give the hotel name rather than a street number.
For a hotel or a large building, put the entrance in your booking notes. It is the single most useful thing you can add.
The Congestion Charge and ULEZ
Waterloo, the South Bank, Lambeth North and Waterloo East are all inside the Congestion Charge zone. The zone boundary runs along the Elephant and Castle side, so SE1 is split — the north of it pays, the south of it does not.
For a pre-booked transfer this is mostly not your problem. Licensed private hire vehicles are exempt from the Congestion Charge for the journey, and any vehicle we send is ULEZ compliant. Which airport suits SE1
Heathrow — west, and the route depends entirely on the hour. Off-peak a driver may go straight out on the A4 through Kensington and Hammersmith. In traffic, south of the river and out via the A3 and M4 is often quicker. Around 17 miles, but time varies more than distance here than almost anywhere.
Gatwick — south through the Elephant and down the A23 through Brixton and Streatham, or across to the A3 and around. Roughly 28 miles. A common early-morning run from the Waterloo hotels.
Luton — north through the West End or round via the A1. Around 35 miles and one of the longer runs from SE1.
Stansted — north-east, typically through the City and out on the A12 and M11. Around 38 miles.
London City — east along the A13 or through the Limehouse Link. Comfortably the shortest airport run from Waterloo at around 9 miles, and often the cheapest airport transfer you will book in London.
Southend — a long one, around 45 miles east on the A13 and A127. Worth booking well ahead.
Early flights from the South Bank hotels
SE1 is dense with hotels, and hotel guests fly early. Pre-dawn pickups are the first slots to fill, so book the night before at the latest rather than on the morning. If you are in a large hotel, the lobby is the reliable meeting point; if you are in an apartment building on Upper Ground or Stamford Street, give the building name and the entrance you will be standing at.
