This cluster has something unusual for south-east London: Herne Hill and Tulse Hill are on Thameslink, and Thameslink runs to Gatwick. Not direct from every platform at every hour, but the connection is real and it is far better than most of SE London gets. If you are flying from Gatwick with light luggage at a reasonable time, that train deserves consideration.

Where the train wins: a solo traveller, a cabin bag, a mid-morning Gatwick flight. It is a sensible, cheap option and we would not tell you otherwise.
Where a car wins:
- Any of the other five airports. Thameslink does nothing for Heathrow, Stansted, London City or Southend. It reaches Luton Airport Parkway, but with a shuttle at the far end.
- Early departures. First services do not cover a 4am pickup for a 6am flight.
- Groups and checked bags. Two adults and two suitcases changes the arithmetic quickly, and the platform access at these stations is not step-free throughout.
- Weekend engineering. Thameslink through here is frequently affected, and the replacement is a bus.

Herne Hill junction and the local roads
- Herne Hill itself is built around a junction where Half Moon Lane, Dulwich Road, Norwood Road and Railton Road meet under the railway bridge. It is tight, busy and slow at peak, and there is very little stopping room right at the junction. A pickup a short way along Half Moon Lane or Dulwich Road is much easier.
- The A215 Norwood Road runs south from Herne Hill through Tulse Hill to West Norwood and on towards Crystal Palace. It is the spine of this cluster.
- Tulse Hill gyratory, where the A205 South Circular meets the A204, is a known bottleneck and best avoided at peak if you have a flight.
- Gipsy Hill is steep — the climb up towards Crystal Palace is one of the sharper gradients in south London, and it matters in ice.
- Brockwell Park sits between Herne Hill and Tulse Hill. Roads around it are residential with heavy parking, so expect a stop a few doors from your address.

Gatwick — around 24 miles. Straight down the A215 and A23 through Streatham and Croydon to the M23. This is one of the closest parts of London to Gatwick by road.
Heathrow — around 18 miles west, via the South Circular to the A3 and M4, or north to the A4.
London City — around 11 miles north-east through Camberwell and the tunnels.
Luton — around 35 miles north through the centre or round the M25.
Stansted — around 40 miles north-east.
Southend — around 46 miles east, the longest of the six from SE27.
